Uttar Pradesh particularly the West and East parts of the state have been witnessing heavy to extremely heavy rains from last many days. So much so that in the last 48 hours, Gorakhpur even recorded three-digit rain to the tune of 158.7 mm, thereby making it the second highest single day fall since 2007.
In fact, parts of East and West Uttar Pradesh has witnessed heavy to very heavy spells in the last 24 hours as well. In the last 24 hours from 08:30 am on Monday, Fursatganj witnessed extremely heavy showers of 99 mm. Let’s take a look at the other districts of Uttar Pradesh that had recorded moderate to heavy rains during the similar time frame in the table below:
As per Skymet Weather, the reason for these hefty showers over the fourth largest state in the country can be attributed to a cyclonic circulation that persists over western parts of Bihar. Moreover, a trough is also extending from Punjab to the Bay of Bengal across North Uttar Pradesh.

The combined effect of both these weather systems resulted in moderate to heavy with isolated extremely heavy showers over the state.
Now, as the cyclonic circulation is likely to intensify and move towards Uttar Pradesh in the net 24-48 hours, therefore these showers are expected to continue lashing parts of Uttar Pradesh for the next 24-48 hours. However, initially, the districts in East Uttar Pradesh such as Gorakhpur, Varanasi, and Bahraich will be the spectator of these good showers.

Thereafter, as the rain belt is likely to shift towards the southern part of West Uttar Pradesh, districts lying in the vicinity of West Uttar Pradesh such as Jhansi, Etah, Aligarh, Agra, Kanpur, and Lucknow can brace for some moderate to heavy showers continuing for at least next 24-48 hours.
Due to these heavy rains, the rainfall status of both East and West Uttar Pradesh that as on July 10 stands at 15% and 17% respectively will also increase. Though such heavy rains in the state along with heavy spells in the adjoining state of Uttarakhand and adjoining Nepal Hills can even result in flooding particularly in the foothills of the state.
Thus, flood threat looms large over the districts such as Lakhimpur Kheri, Sitapur, Bahraich and Bara Banki. Hence, caution is advised.
