Flood threat remains in Bahraich, Gaya, Bhagalpur as heavy rains to continue

Bihar-floods

Heavy to very heavy rains continued over most parts of Uttar Pradesh on the last day as well. In fact, the state has been witnessing intense showers for the last three to four days. However, the rains have remained more intense over Central and Northwest Uttar Pradesh.

East Uttar Pradesh, on the contrary, has recorded some light with isolated moderate showers. These rains have even triggered flood-like situation in most parts of the state.

In the last 24 hours, Bareilly in Uttar Pradesh recorded extremely heavy rains to the tune of 132 mm which happens to be the second highest 24-hour fall in the last ten years. Other cities like Lucknow recorded 114 mm of rains, followed by Fursatganj at 73 mm, Bahraich 60 mm, Allahabad 55 mm, Najibabad 54 mm, 35.6 mm in Hardoi, 34.2 mm in Sultanpur, Shahjahanpur 31 mm, Ambedkar town 31.4 mm, Gorakhpur 23 mm, Kanpur 16.6 mm and Varanasi 12.2 mm, and Kanpur witnessed 17 mm of rains.

Monsoon rains over Bihar, on the other hand, has so far remained on the lower side. However, some light with isolated moderate rains did appear over the state on the last day.

During the similar time frame, Chapra recorded 42 mm of rains, Forbesganj recorded 23.2 mm, Bhagalpur 9 mm and Patna witnessed 5.6 mm of rains.

As per Skymet Weather, the axis of Monsoon trough is passing through the northern parts of Uttar Pradesh. In addition to this, the low-pressure area is still persisting over the eastern parts of Uttar Pradesh and adjoining Bihar.

Therefore, we expect moderate to heavy rains to continue over Uttar Pradesh for at least the next 24 hours. Thereafter, the low-pressure area would move towards Bihar, resulting in the rains to reduce gradually. However, still, moderate rains with one odd heavy spell would continue as the trough would though still persist over the region.

As the low-pressure area would shift towards Bihar, rains are expected to increase over the state in the next two to three days.

Due to constant rains, the water level of rivers in both the states like Gomti, Ghaghra, Saryu, and Ramganga in Uttar Pradesh and Narayani, Bagmati, and Koshi in Bihar are already high.

Rains in the hills of Nepal are also adding to the rivers to swell. These conditions may trigger flood like situation over the foothills of Uttar Pradesh and Bihar. But fortunately, rains are decreasing after 24 hours over Uttar Pradesh therefore, the situation would remain under check. Caution against flood is advised for Rampur, Bahraich, Lakhimpur Khiri, and Pilibhit.

On the other hand, moderate rains would prevail over the state, mainly over districts like Madhubani, Sitamarhgi, Champaran, Purnea, Kishanganj, Araria, Supaul, and Bhagalpur. Patna and Gaya may also record some good rains.

Both the states were rainfall deficient until the first half of July with the deficiency in excess of 50%. However, with a major improvement, as on August 3, Uttar Pradesh is rainfall deficit by 6% which is considered to be normal, meanwhile, Bihar is rain deficit by 22%.
