Nainital rainsThe hills of North India normally receive rain whenever there is an active Western Disturbance in the region. In the last ten days two back to back Western Disturbances gave good amounts of rain in all the three states of Jammu and Kashmir, Uttarakhand and Himachal Pradesh. The first WD was observed from July 5 to July 6, while the second one from July 9 to July 12 was prolonged and gave heavy rain at several places.

For instance, Dehradun in Uttarakhand had received 84 mm and 115 mm of rain on July 5 and July 10, respectively. Nainital on July 9 had witnessed 52 mm of rain. Mukteshwar and Pithoragarh had also recorded some good amounts of rain during this period.

The neighbouring state of Himachal Pradesh also observed some good rain with Una and Kullu witnessing 73 mm and 53 mm of rain, respectively on July 10.

Widespread and heavy rain was also observed in the state of Jammu and Kashmir during this period. Jammu on July 9 had recorded 82 mm of rain.

Due to heavy rain, normal life in the hills was thrown out of gear. Flooding and landslides were reported from several places.
Thereafter, the weather cleared up rapidly and since July 13 only light isolated rain has been reported from the region.

But now a fresh Western Disturbance which is over North Pakistan is approaching the state of Jammu and Kashmir.Weathermen at Skymet expect heavy rain to commence over Jammu and Kashmir from the night of July 16. The rain belt will gradually extend to cover the other two hilly states of Uttarakhand and Himachal Pradesh.

This spell of rain will continue till July 19 and reduce thereafter as the Western Disturbance will move northwards.
