Updated at 11:45 PM on 12/11/2017: Chennai rains expected to intensify, heavy rain possible

As per chief meteorologist Mahesh Palawat at Skymet Weather, Chennai rains are likely to pick up pace, with which one or two short spell of heavy rain and thundershowers are anticipated in the next two hours over the Tamil Nadu capital.

As reiterated by Skymet Weather, Chennai rains are intensifying in the late night hours. All thanks to the low pressure area which is persisting over Southwest Bay of Bengal and adjoining area. Currently, clouding has increased over the region. With these rains, water logging and traffic jams will wreak havoc among the locals. People are advised to stay cautious.

Updated at 10:25 AM on 12/11/2017: Good Chennai rains to start anytime soon

Heavy rains along with some isolated very heavy showers lashed Chennai in the first week of November; thereafter the weather went dry over the city. But now, Chennai rains have made a comeback, though the intensity remains on the lower end in the past two days.

Within a span of 24 hours from 08:30 am on Saturday, Nungambakkam Observatory in Chennai witnessed a mere 1 mm and Minambakkam 0.4 mm of rain.

As per weather models, the rains are likely to pick up pace in the next 24 hours. All thanks to the low pressure area which is persisting over Southwest Bay of Bengal and adjoining area. An associated cyclonic circulation can also be seen extending up to 7.6 km above sea level.

With the combined effect of these weather systems, we can say that the sky will remain overcast over the Tamil Nadu capital most of the time, followed with moderate to heavy spells of rain and thundershowers activities. With these rains, inundation of low lying areas and traffic chaos will wreak havoc among the locals.

Further, strong surface winds are also expected accompanied with moderate lightning that will affect the city of Chennai during the next two to three days.

Thereafter, the rains will start reducing gradually. Day maximums are likely to remain around 25°C-27°C, while night temperatures may settle at 22°C-23°C. Humidity will remain on the higher side.
