Southwest Monsoon made a timely onset with South India. However, the first week onward, it became sluggish due to which rainfall activity reduced.
The month of June saw fluctuation in terms of rainfall. Mid-June however remained positive. Thereafter, rainfall activity reduced to quite an extent and recovery was only seen during the last week. After the roller coaster ride of rains, June ended at a deficiency of -5 %.
Talking about the month of July, the first ten days were consistently deficient by 15%. Recovery in terms of rainfall started thereafter and by July 20th it became 0%. Marginal positivity was seen after a few days but the last week of July saw increased deficiency and ended with - 6 % deficiency.
The month of August was an exception where in the entire month remained negative and the monthly deficiency went to - 20 % and even - 30 % halfway through the month. thereafter some recovery was seen but the deficiency remained at -20% in the last week. The month of August and did at the deficiency of - 6 %.
All these three months have under-performed and the deficiency trend in terms of rainfall has continued which does not happen very often and is also not a very good sign. At some of these occasions where all three months of Monsoon have performed poorly the season has ended with near drought conditions.
Talking about the year of 2014 which was a drought year, there was poor performance of Monsoon in June, July and August however the month of September was still decent.
This time September shows no positive indications for performing exceptionally well or even close to normal levels and 2018 Monsoon could be one of those times when rainfall goes below normal during all the four months.
