Heavy Downpour Over Bihar, West Bengal: Rain Belt To Shift Over Northeast India

March 21, 2024 2:55 PM |

There had been a fair amount of unseasonal weather activity going on for the last 4-5 days over central and eastern parts of the country. States of Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra and Telangana had partial coverage but Chhattisgarh, Odisha, West Bengal, Jharkhand and Bihar witnessed fairly widespread, unseasonal rain, thundershowers, lightning, gusty winds and hailstorms at some places. A round of untimely and bizarre activity seems to have ended now for the eastern parts. Action, now shifts over northeastern states.

In the past 24 hours, Bihar and West Bengal have been battered with fairly heavy weather activity. Lightening strikes, fierce thundershowers, howling winds and hail in some pockets were the highlights, last night. Chief amounts of rainfall: Muzaffarpur-52mm, Motihari-41mm, Purnea-27mm, Forbesganj-49mm, and Malda-54mm were some of the locations in these two states. Moderate rains were observed even at Patna, Gaya, Chapra, Bhagalpur, Kolkata and Howrah. Sub-Himalayan West Bengal also received scattered moderate showers.

The remnant of cyclonic circulation, which triggered this activity, is now marked over extreme northeast Bihar and North Bengal. It has weakened too. Also, the anticyclone over the Bay of Bengal is being relocated. Accordingly, the weather activity will now cease over these states and stretch over the entire northeastern region.

Northeast India, all-inclusive,  is going to rain for the next week. Lower Assam, Meghalaya and Arunachal Pradesh will be at risk of receiving heavy and intermittent rains, commencing today. Weather activity over Northeast India is invariably intense during the night and early morning hours. It has a tendency to find some clearance during the forenoon and afternoon hours. All the northeastern states are reeling with a large seasonal rainfall deficit. Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, and Tripura have a shortfall of 93% in March. The anticipated wet spell will surely shrink the margin of deficiency.
