Heavy Monsoon rains approaching Delhi, Punjab, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh

July 13, 2016 1:12 PM |

Punjab rainsThe northern plains of the country have been receiving scanty rainfall for the last many days. West Uttar Pradesh, Haryana, Punjab and North Rajasthan were almost dry, with only isolated on and off patchy rains.

Till now, Monsoon-like rains have not been witnessed over the northern plains.

Some parts of Central and East Uttar Pradesh along with eastern parts of Bihar have received few good spells of Monsoon showers, but continuous good showers have not been observed.

For the last many days, Monsoon systems have been bringing heavy showers over Central India. Due to these weather systems, the axis of the Monsoon trough also remained over Central India. Now, the weather systems along with the Monsoon trough have started shifting northwards. By next 24 to 48 hours, we expect significant increase in rainfall as the Monsoon trough will shift close to the foothills of the Himalayas.

Several spells of moderate to heavy showers are likely over Punjab, Haryana, Delhi-NCR, entire Uttar Pradesh and Bihar. Few heavy to very heavy spells are also expected over West Uttar Pradesh and Uttarakhand. Intensity of rainfall will be much more over the foothills.

Delhi has witnessed on and off rains since July 10. However, now patchy rains will be replaced by fairly widespread continuous good showers. This episode of good Monsoon rainfall will last till July 15.

Most of the places in the northern plains have received normal rains so far. After this spell, the subdivision of Northwest India may record excess Monsoon rains.

Farmers have been waiting for good rains to irrigate the lands and now this spell of rain will reduce the use of tube wells for irrigation at the time of sowing.
