Heavy rain and thundershowers lashed Kerala, more in store

On and off rain activities were going on over parts of Kerala for the last 2-3 days. An offshore trough is persisting from the South-East Arabian Sea to the Karnataka coast across the coastal parts of Kerala. A cyclonic circulation was also over the Comorin area.

During the last 24 hours, there was a sudden spike in rain activities across Kerala. Many districts of Kerala recorded moderate to heavy thundershowers. During the last 24 hours, Periyakulam recorded 53mm, Palakkad 52mm, Thrissur 31mm, Tiruchirappalli 31mm, Kannur 19mm, Alappuzha 18mm, Kozhikode 18mm, Thiruvananthapuram 18mm, Valparai 14mm and Karipur airport 11mm of rainfall respectively.

These widespread rain and thundershower activities are expected to continue over Kerala for at least the next 24 hours. Thereafter, rain activities will reduce significantly and will become almost clear.

Pre-monsoon activity is usually commenced over Kerala in the month of March and continues until the end of May. But the intensity of Pre-monsoon rains increases in the month of April and May. Southwest monsoon makes an onset over the southern tip of Kerala around June 1st.
