Heavy rain in Uttarakhand triggers landslide, cloudburst; kills 9

Landslide in Uttarakhand

Heavy rains in the hilly states of North India have wreaked havoc in the form of incidents of landslides and cloud bursts. Heavy rains in Uttarakhand on Friday has resulted in a cloudburst in the Kotdwar district of Uttarakhand that has reportedly claimed nine lives.

Such heavy spells have even resulted in landslides and flash flood and Skymet Weather further predicts more heavy rains resulting in flooding in Kotdwar and Pauri Garhwal district. Due to these torrential showers, the already swollen river water has started entering houses thereby washing away some people in the area.

The incessant showers also led to a landslide on the Gangotri Highway near Laldhang and Chadethi. The roads are still blocked due to the landslide.

On account of such heavy spells, the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) teams also stepped in evacuate the trapped residents and people were advised to stay away from the low-lying regions. Heavy rains even led to the leak of electricity, leading to short-circuits at many places.

In another incident, a bus carrying 20 passengers in the Bageswar's district of Uttarakhand slipped into a gorge due to the landslide. However, all thanks to the almighty that all the 20 passengers were rescued safely.

These rains were due to the Western Disturbance which was prevailing over East Jammu and Kashmir. The axis of Monsoon trough is also passing through the foothills of Himalayas. Due to the combined effect of both these weather systems, moderate to heavy rains occurred at many places over Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand.
