Heavy rainfall lashes Bengaluru, surplus rain over South Peninsula

This Pre-Monsoon season is turning out to be good for south Peninsula in terms of rainfall. Between March 1 and May 1, South India is surplus by 19%. Except Andhra Pradesh and Telangana, all other states are either excess or large excess.

Bengaluru has received 54 mm rain during last 24 hours. Heavy rainfall in the month of May is not uncommon for the city. Monthly average rainfall of Bengaluru is 107.4 mm. Highest 24-hour rainfall 153.9 mm was witnessed by Bengaluru on May 6th and in 1909.

There are chances of light to moderate rain with isolated heavy spells over the city until May 6th. Many parts of Kerala, Tamil Nadu and South Karnataka may receive good rains for next 3 to 4 days and scattered rainfall may occur over Andhra Pradesh. Isolated pockets of Telangana may get light patchy rain and thunderstorm.

Low pressure area is expected to develop over South Andaman Sea by May 4th, which may intensify gradually into a depression and will move in in north east direction. Due to formation of this weather system moisture feed over South Peninsular will reduce. Subsequently rain activities will also subside over South India.
