Rain, hailstorm likely over Kolkata

Parts of West Bengal have been witnessing rain and thundershowers ever since the arrival of Southwest Monsoon. Though the intensity of rains differed from light to moderate, seldom has the districts of West Bengal remained rain-free.

The last 24 hours too rained heavily over several districts of West Bengal. Three-digit rains were observed by districts such as Bankura and Asansol. However, rains remained in moderate intensity over Purulia district.

In the last 24 hours, districts, particularly in East West Bengal, have recorded heavy to extremely heavy rains. While moderate intensity showers lashed the other districts of the state.

Within the span of 24 hours from 08:30 am on Tuesday Bankura recorded extremely heavy three-digit rains to the tune of 116.8 mm, followed by Asansol that witnessed heavy rains of 101 mm.  During the similar time frame, Purulia recorded 81 mm of rains, Coochbehar 27.8 mm, Burdwan 21.7 mm, Krishnanagar 15 mm and Jalpaiguri recorded light spells of 9.5 mm. While, Kolkata witnessed light rains of 4 mm only.

These rains as per Skymet Weather can be attributed to the well-marked low-pressure area which was persisting since last few days over West Bengal and adjoining Jharkhand. This weather system has given heavy to extremely heavy rains over the districts of West Bengal.

Now, this well-marked low-pressure area has shifted over Jharkhand but is still affecting the region due to which, moderate rains with isolated heavy spells have occurred over parts of West Bengal. Though in contrast with the recent spells, rains have reduced considerably.

Due to the shifting of this weather system, rains are now likely to reduce over West Bengal. Gangetic West Bengal including Kolkata will receive scattered light rains, but the districts adjacent to Jharkhand may continue with few moderate spells for next 24 hours. Thereafter, the intensity of rains in this region may witness a declining trend as well.

Moreover, the mercury level which was below normal in parts of the state a few days back will come back to be normal and humid and warm weather will take over.
