Heavy rains in Kerala for longer duration

August 2, 2022 9:20 AM |

Kerala is the only subdivision in South Peninsula with below normal rains as of now. Even halfway through the season, Southern Peninsula is at 28 percent surplus, while Kerala is still observing a deficit of 26 percent till July 31.

For Kerala, during the Monsoon season, rains are on the heavier side and the average of rains is on the higher side, thus the deficiency climbs further up in case of lesser rains.

However, the good news is that Kerala has seen some good rains in the last 24 hours wherein Thiruvanathapuram saw 64 mm, Punalur 86 mm, Alappuzha 68 mm etc. Similar conditions are expected until August 6. Rains may be on the heavier side with the possibility of heavy to very heavy rains also on some occasions.

The pockets of heavy rains will vary, and rains will start over the southern half of Kerala including Alappuzha, Thiruvananthapuram, Punalur, Kochi etc. Northern parts of Coonoor, Kozhikode and Wayanad will see lesser rains in the beginning and will increase by the end of the week.

These rains are attributed to a Cyclonic Circulation over the Comorin region and a Trough is extending from Rayalaseema downward in the close proximity. Wind convergence is taking place along the coast.
