Key Takeaways:

  • Mumbai is experiencing hot and humid conditions with temperatures 2–3°C above normal.
  • Persistent sea breeze has increased humidity and discomfort levels.
  • Weather systems forming over Gujarat and the Arabian Sea may bring changes.
  • Light rainfall and slight relief are possible between April 19 and 22.

Mumbai is reeling under hot and humid conditions for the last 2–3 days. Actually, in the first week of April, the day temperatures hovered around 31°–32°C, which were near normal for the city. However, the second week of April has been warmer than average, and the temperature has gone above normal by 2–3°C. Over the last two days, the maximum temperature rose to 35° and 36°C, about 3°C above normal. A rise of 3°C in temperature, coupled with humidity in excess of 50%, raises discomfort disproportionately high. These conditions will remain till Saturday and may see temporary relief thereafter.

The wind pattern at the surface and lower levels has changed over and around Mumbai. The sea breeze during afternoon and evening hours generally gets replaced by land breeze during the night, morning, and forenoon hours. However, there has been a persistent sea breeze, almost round the clock, for the city and suburbs over the last three days. This has raised humidity levels and, in turn, the discomfort index. The surface wind does become very light and variable during late night and early morning between 12 and 3 a.m., but is predominantly having a sea component for a longer duration than normal.

Multiple factors working in tandem may bring some change and relief from the highly sultry conditions. A cyclonic circulation is coming up over South Gujarat and adjoining parts, changing the wind stream along the Konkan region. Also, an anticyclone will be marked over the Northeast Arabian Sea, off the Konkan and Goa coast in the lower levels. The seasonal Peninsular India trough/wind discontinuity will oscillate and remain in proximity to Madhya Maharashtra on the lee side of the Ghats. Together, these factors will lead to the formation of a convergence zone and cause partly cloudy skies over South Gujarat, Madhya Maharashtra, and Konkan between 19th and 22nd April. There are chances of light rainfall over the city and suburbs during this period. The spread and intensity of the weather activity may not be large along the Konkan Coast; yet, there will be marginal relief from the extreme hot, humid, and sultry weather.
