The northwestern states of Punjab and Haryana have been experiencing rain and thundershower activities since the beginning of February. This trend seems to prevail as fairly widespread rain was observed in most parts during the last 24 hours

According to the rainfall data available with Skymet till February 26, Punjab is largely rain surplus by 102%, while Haryana has received near normal rains and is deficient by a meager 8%.

During the next two days, we expect weather activities to intensify and become widespread in the region. The possibility of strong winds, thunderstorm and lightning strike cannot be ruled out during this period.

However, the bulk of the weather activity in terms of fairly widespread light to moderate rain and thundershowers will take place in the next 24 hours. There are high chances of hailstorm in some pockets of these states.

The rainfall activity is a result of successive Western Disturbances and their induced cyclonic circulation over the northwestern plains. Currently, an induced cyclonic circulation is seen over Northwest Rajasthan and a trough is extending from this system up to Southwest Uttar Pradesh.

In the wake of these rains, day temperatures in most places in Punjab and Haryana have dropped significantly and are presently below normal by 2 to 4 degrees.
