India all set for a record-food grain output in crop year 2017-18

Despite a drop in the projected wheat output in the current crop year, country’s food grain production is expected to create a new record by producing 277.49 million tons in the 2017-18 crop year (July-June), with pulses and rice yields revealing new highs.

On Tuesday, the agriculture ministry released its latest estimates exactly when the administration has been investigating different options of obtaining increasingly food grains from the farmers in the time of bounty.

According to the latest estimates, the production of wheat and oilseeds may decline. while, the output of rice, pulses, coarse cereals, cotton and sugarcane are expected to be higher this year.

The estimation of wheat crop production in the crop year 2017-2018 is around 97.11 million tons, a drop by 1.40 percent. On the contrary, the production of rice is estimated to increase by 1.31 million tons over the 109.70 million tons in last year, as per the agricultural ministry.

Because of near normal monsoonal rains in 2017 and diverse approach activities taken by the Government, the nation has seen record food grain production in the present year, the Agriculture Ministry said.

As per the authorities, the drop-in wheat production is basically because of 4.27% drop in acreage at 30.42 million hectares in the current rabi season. The shift from wheat to pulses by the farmers in Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan, Haryana, West Bengal, Maharashtra, and Uttarakhand is also one of the causes for the drop.

Rice production is expected to move to a record 111.01 million tons this product year, 1.2% more than a year ago's yield. A great portion of the rice generation originates from the Kharif season. The production of pulses is also pegged at a record 23.95 million tons this year, 0.82 million tons above from 23.13 million tons a year ago.

Gram and Urad production is evaluated to be a record 11.10 million tons and 3.23 million tons separately, this year.

Talking about the cash crops, the production of sugarcane is evaluated to expand essentially to 353.23 million tons in 2017-18 crop year as against 306.07 million tons which were last year. Cotton yield is pegged higher at 33.92 million parcels (of 170 kg each) as against 32.58 million bunches a year ago. While that of jute/mesta is evaluated to bring down at 10.51 million bundles (of 180 kg each) amid the said period.
