Karnataka Rains 1The state of Karnataka is sandwiched between the adjoining two states of Tamil Nadu as well as Kerala. However, the variability in terms of weather conditions over all these states is quite large.

Moreover, talking about the state of Karnataka alone, there is a huge weather variation amongst the three subdivisions including Coastal Karnataka, South Interior Karnataka and North Interior Karnataka.

The Southwest Monsoon remains the rainiest for the state of Karnataka while winters remain the driest along with the states of Gujarat and Maharashtra.

Moreover, during the Southwest Monsoon, the Coastal Karnataka region is the rainiest pocket in the country. In fact, the seasonal average for the subdivision crosses the 3000 mm mark at 3083 followed by the Konkan and Goa.

Stations in Coastal Karnataka have monthly rainfall figures in four digits while cities in the north including Delhi have their annual rainfall amounts to less than 800 mm.

Between the three subdivisions of Karnataka, Coastal Karnataka receives the most amount of rains followed by South Interior Karnataka with the least amount of rains recorded in North Interior Karnataka.

As far as the seasonal rains are concerned, the maximum amount of rainfall is recorded during the Monsoon season, followed by Post Monsoon, Pre-Monsoon with the least amount of rains in winters.

Talking about weather conditions during the Pre-Monsoon season, North Interior Karnataka is one of the hottest pockets with cities like Bellary and Raichur seeing their average maximums above 40 degrees in April. Due to South Interior Karnataka’s higher elevation, the region enjoys relatively better weather conditions.

During the Pre Monsoon season, rainfall activity is more violent in the interiors. However, rainfall amounts are higher over Coastal Karnataka at 178 mm, followed by 145 mm in South Interior Karnataka and the least in North Interior Karnataka at 85 mm.

Karnataka, on the other hand, enjoys mild winters with temperatures remaining in the comfortable range.

As far as the rainfall activity in the three states during Southwest Monsoon is concerned, Kerala witnesses about 2000 mm of seasonal rains. Meanwhile, Karnataka sees about 650 mm, almost three times less than that of Kerala. However, it is Tamil Nadu which receives the least rainfall of all at 320 mm, because of the region being a rain shadow area.

Thus, the state of Karnataka on the whole witnesses a range of weather activity resulting in shades of patterns right from it being the rainiest during Monsoon and the hottest during Pre-Monsoon season.
