Maiden Well Marked Low Pressure Forms Over Bay Of Bengal, Heavy Rains Over Kolkata

July 28, 2021 5:33 PM |

Yesterday’s low pressure area over North Bay of Bengal(BoB) has intensified in to a well marked low pressure area over the same region. This is the 1st well marked ‘low’ of season 2021 over BoB and is expected to become more marked in the next 24hr. The weather system has extended its reach to cover coastal parts of West Bengal and Bangladesh. While intensifying over the next 48 hr, the system will move across West Bengal, Bihar and Jharkhand. Further, it will travel over Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh and reach up to Rajasthan over the next 5-6days.

As a well marked low pressure area today, heavy to very heavy rainfall is expected over southern parts of Gangetic West Bengal covering Kolkata, Howrah, Midnapore, Jhargram, Haldia, South 24 Pargana, Diamond Harbour, Contai and Digha. Intense and furious rain may result localized flooding in some areas and disrupt connectivity. Squally winds along with lightening strikes will cause hazardous weather activity in the evening and night. There is large possibility of road and air traffic getting disrupted due to severe thunderstorm, water logging and submerging of few pockets.

Heavy rainfall belt will shift over Jharkhand and South Bihar in the subsequent 48hr.  Heavy to very heavy rainfall is likely over Ranchi, Jamshedpur, Bokaro, Dhanbad, Deoghar, Hazaribagh, Dumka, Pakur, Aurangabad, Gaya, Buxar, Bhojpur, Nawada, Lakhisarai, Jehanabad, Munger, Banka and Jamui.  Heavy downpour is quite likely over North Chhattisgarh, East Madhya Pradesh and South Uttar Pradesh between 30thJuly and 03rdAug.  The last posts of East and North Rajasthan along with national capital Delhi will have to wait still longer for direct impact of this system.

Overall, the southwest monsoon will remain active over Eastern and Northern parts of the country for next 7 days. Hilly states of North India and state of Madhya Pradesh in the central region will also remain the focus of intense weather activity during this period. Subdued monsoon action is expected over southern parts of the country.  Seasonal deficiency of 2% may get covered with incessant rains over these parts in the remaining days of the month.
