Northeast Monsoon: Heavy rains to lash Tamil Nadu, Chennai rains revive

Pre-Monsoon season is generally not a very constructive season in terms of rain and thundershowers for the state of Tamil Nadu. Moreover, rains, if any, usually occurs in the interior parts of the state. On the other hand, the coastal stations normally remain dry.

On the past day also, some light to moderate rains were recorded by the interior districts of the state. However, the coastal stations sacrificed with the rain activities and remained dry.

Within the span of 24 hours from 08:30 am on Thursday, Valparai recorded 8 mm of rains, Dharmapuri 5mm, Kodaikanal 4 mm, Madurai 1 mm, Yercadu 1 mm, Coimbatore 0.1 mm, and Kanyakumari recorded some traces of rains.

In fact, the interior stations of the state have been receiving on and off pre-Monsoon rains for the last four to five days.

The coastal stations normally receive some rains on account of any significant weather system developing in the south Bay of Bengal. However, this season, the month of May that is the peak month for pre-Monsoon season, has so far remained good for the state.

As per Skymet Weather, these rains were on account of a north-south trough extending from the central parts of the country to interior Tamil Nadu.

However, now, a cyclonic circulation has developed over Lakshadweep and adjoining Southeast Arabian Sea. A trough from this system is extending up to North Interior Karnataka. However, the system would not have any impact over Tamil Nadu and we now expect the intensity of rains to reduce over Tamil Nadu. But, a few afternoon showers cannot be ruled out over the interior parts of the state in stations like Kodaikanal, Madurai, and Coimbatore.

On the contrary, the coastal stations of Tamil Nadu are likely to remain dry and warm. However, few thunderstorm or thundershower activities along with partly cloudy skies may be a chance in the coastal districts, including Chennai and Puducherry.
