Pre-Monsoon rains have been battering the eastern states of West Bengal and Odisha for the past two to three days. However, the intensity of these pre-Monsoon showers increased a day before when many parts of West Bengal got to witness light to moderate with isolated heavy spells.

On the other hand, the intensity of rains over parts of Odisha varied from light to moderate. With the intensity being more over the interior regions of the state and the coastal stations managing with light spells only.

These rains, as per Skymet Weather, can be associated with a cyclonic circulation which is over East Bihar and adjoining Jharkhand and West Bengal. Due to this, humid winds from the Bay of Bengal are also incurring moisture over many parts of West Bengal, particularly the southern districts of Gangetic West Bengal. The moisture incursion is also taking place over parts of North Odisha, adjacent to Gangetic West Bengal.

As this is a favorable period for Kal Baisakhi or Nor’westers for most parts of East India, these rains are accompanied with strong gusty winds and lightning strikes.

In the last 24 hours, from 08:30 am on Sunday, Malda recorded hefty showers to the tune of 77 mm, Angul 17 mm, Sundargarh 16 mm, Berhampore 6 mm, Purulia 6 mm, Sambalpur 4 mm, Jharsuguda 3 mm, Sri Niketan 2 mm, Cuttack 1 mm, Titlagarh 1 mm and Bhubaneswar recorded 0.2 mm of rains.

As of now also, we expect moderate to heavy rain and thundershowers to continue over parts of both West Bengal and Odisha for the next 24 hours. These rains would affect mainly the stations of Gangetic West Bengal and northern parts of Odisha.

Thus, the stations like Purulia, Bardhaman, Kolkata, Midnapore, Malda, Contai, and Diamond Harbour in West Bengal while Angul, Sambalpur, Chandbali, Jharsuguda, Bhubaneswar in Odisha would get affected.

In fact, moderate rain and thundershower with strong winds associated with lightning are possible at many places with heavy showers at a few places over Alipurduar, Bankura, Bardhhaman, Birbhum, Midnapore, Hugli, Jalpaiguri, Coochbehar Kolkata, Malda, Murshidabad, Nadia, Purulia, during next 24 hours.

As these rains would be accompanied by strong gusty winds, this may cause water-logging and destruction to property.

After 24 hours, moderate spells of rain and thundershowers would continue but the intensity would decrease to some extent. The minimum and maximum temperatures may also dip significantly due to heavy rain and cloud cover.
