Mumbai Rains

Mumbai rains have been displaying a weak performance for quite some time now. During the month of July, the city only recorded good spells of rain during the first two days. Thereafter, Monsoon rains took a backseat and since then have not revived at all.

The last 24 hours were also not different and only light rains were recorded over the maximum city. In fact, in a span of 24 hours from 8:30 am on Monday, the Santa Cruz observatory witnessed a mere 3 mm of rainfall. Meanwhile, the Colaba observatory witnessed 7 mm of showers.

The reason for the reduction of rains can be attributed to the weakening of the off-shore trough along the West Coast. The winds blowing over the region have also become slightly weak over the region.

However, good showers are all set to make an appearance over Mumbai once again. A cyclonic circulation is expected to form over Pakistan and adjoining Kutch region. Due to this, moisture incursion will increase over Mumbai and adjoining areas which will further lead to cloud development.

Thus, moderate showers are expected over Mumbai and adjoining areas around July 12 and thereafter. The possibility of a few isolated heavy spells also cannot be ruled out over the city of dreams.

So far, Mumbai has recorded a mere 192 mm of rainfall against its monthly average of 799.7 mm. July is the rainiest month for the commercial capital of India out of the four months of the Southwest Monsoon season.

However, this July, Monsoon has remained sluggish and only time will tell if the city will be able to surpass its monthly mean.
