Nagpur, Nashik, Pune, Akola gear up for good rains; begin land preparation

May 16, 2018 4:03 PM |

Disappointing August for Pune in terms of rain, light showers ahead

The heatwave that has been bothering parts of Maharashtra, especially Vidarbha has finally abated.  The mercury levels across many parts of Vidarbha have also dropped significantly.

The reason for this drop in the maximum temperatures can be related with on and off pre-Monsoon rain and thundershowers that had occurred in the neighboring states and in parts of Vidarbha.

On the past day also, scattered rains have occurred over parts of South Madhya Maharashtra and isolated pockets of Vidarbha. In the last 24 hours, from 08:30 am on Tuesday, Sangli recorded 15 mm of rains, Gondia 3.8 mm, and Solapur witnessed 1 mm of rains.

These rains were due to the trough which is extending from East Madhya Pradesh to North Interior Karnataka across Vidarbha.

As of now also, we expect isolated rains to continue over South Madhya Maharashtra and parts of Vidarbha today. Thereafter, the intensity and spread of rains may increase tomorrow, which would then also cover South Konkan, Madhya Maharashtra and parts of Marathwada.

Thus, the cities like Nagpur, Nashik, Pune, Akola, Solapur, Vengurla, Ratnagiri, Washim, Kolhapur, and Sangli may experience these scattered rain and thundershowers.

The heatwave has already abated from parts of Vidarbha and due to the upcoming rainy weather, we do not expect any significant rise in the temperatures. However, North Konkan and adjoining North Madhya Maharashtra region may experience dry and hot weather conditions. Hence, dry weather would continue to prevail over Mumbai, Thane, and Alibag.

At this stage, let us see the impact of this weather on the agriculture belt of Maharashtra:

In view of isolated rains today, farmers are advised to prepare land and nursery raising of early transplanted rice. Farmers can also postpone irrigation and chemical plant protection measures for next five days due to chances of rain.

Farmers are also advised to keep the harvested produce at a safer place. Farmers should also undertake land preparation for the sowing of Kharif crops. For Konkan region, farmers should harvest the mature Mango fruits before 10 am in the morning and after 4 pm in the evening. Also, farmers should keep the harvested fruits in shade to prevent spongy tissue disease and from heat.
