Northeast India is as such the rainiest region of the country during both pre-Monsoon and Southwest Monsoon season. In the Northeast region, the rainiest pocket is Arunachal Pradesh, followed by Assam and Meghalaya and then finally the NMMT (Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, and Tripura) region.

However, at the moment, all these three divisions of Northeast India so far in the pre-Monsoon season (from March 1 till date) are rainfall deficient.

As on April 25, the major brunt of rainfall deficiency is borne by NMMT region which is 47% rain deficit. Arunachal Pradesh is on the second mat with 32% rainfall deficiency. However, Assam and Meghalaya are a shade better with the rainfall almost close to normal at 14%.

However, Skymet Weather now expects a rainy week on cards for almost the entire stretch of Northeast India.

According to Skymet Weather, a cyclonic circulation lies over Bihar and adjoining West Bengal. A trough from this system is also extending up to Manipur across Bangladesh. In addition to this, Western Disturbance is also moving along north of Sub-Himalayan West Bengal towards further East.

The combination of both the systems may cause convergence and pumping of moist winds leading to rains.

In addition to this, a cyclonic circulation is also seen over South Andaman Sea. This feature may signify and become a low-pressure area in the next 24 hours. This system may further intensify into a well-marked low-pressure area in the next 4-5 days.

This system may enter the Myanmar region as it is very close to Bangladesh and Arakan Coast. After entering Myanmar mainland, the system would weaken however, this would send a fresh pulse of southerly winds over the northeastern states.

These southerly winds would trigger good amount of rains over Northeast India. Thus, an extended spell of good rains with varied intensity may affect the northeastern states. However, the rain intensity would be more over Assam and Meghalaya region for the week.

Additionally, NMMT region may also brace for some good pre-Monsoon showers between April 30 and May 1, though the intensity would be more over the northern half of NMMT that is much more over Nagaland and Manipur in comparison with the other two states.

The mountainous terrain of the region, particularly, Meghalaya can also expect some inclement weather conditions in terms of incessant rains, squally winds, isolated hailstorm, mudslides and landslides that may cause travel and conveyance disruptions.

These pre-Monsoon spells would be helpful in curtailing the rainfall deficiency.
