One lakh people affected by rain in Northeast India, flood alert persists

April 26, 2016 1:10 PM |

Assam floods mainAs have been reiterated by the Skymet, Northeast India has been receiving good showers for more than one week now. On Monday, Cherrapunji received 139.6 mm of rainfall. Several other places in Assam and Arunachal Pradesh received heavy rains. As of now, rainfall has reduced in the NMMT region consisting of Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram and Tripura. But, rain and thundershowers will continue over Lower Assam and Meghalaya.

During last 24 hours, Silchar received 44 mm of rainfall. Tezpur received 19 mm of rain, Dibrugarh received 3 mm and Tawang 4 mm of rain.

However, we should not lower our guard. The regional flood alert system is still in place and efforts should be made to notify the masses. Though rainfall has reduced now, we can expect the intensity of rainfall to increase in a couple of days. Moreover, the catchment areas have received good rains over the last few days and the rivers generally take some time to react and flow down the slopes.

On Monday, the flood situation in Assam had worsened. According to media reports, about one lakh people across six districts in Assam have been affected by the floods. Around 7,412 have been shifted to 40 relief camps in Sivasagar, Tinsukia, Dibrugarh and Charaideo. The disaster management teams have been deployed as several tributaries of the Brahmaputra are still flowing above the danger level.

Incessant rains for the last few days have also led to massive landslides in Arunachal Pradesh, Nagaland and Assam. This has disrupted road and rail traffic over the region.

The Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA) has confirmed that the worst affected districts include Sivasagar, Charaideo, Jorhat, Tinsukia, Dibrugarh and Cachar.
