Pleasant weather in Bengaluru, city inches closer to monthly normal

July 23, 2015 1:22 PM |

Bengaluru RainThe city of Bengaluru enjoys mostly pleasant conditions during Monsoon. The normal rainfall for the month of July in the city stands at 108.9 mm. So far, this year, Bengaluru has recorded 91.3 mm rainfall in the month of July. In the last 24 hours, the city received 3.4 mm of rain.

The main contributing factors for comfortable conditions in the capital of Karnataka are rain and the city’s elevation. When you compare Delhi’s elevation (a meagre 409 feet) with Bengaluru’s (some 3020 feet), the difference becomes quite evident. These two factors (rain and elevation) work in tandem with each other and keep Bengaluru cool and comfortable for most part of the year.

Mostly overcast conditions prevail in Bengaluru during Monsoon. Clouding over the city in the morning is a normal sight during Monsoon. Moreover a consistent light breeze gives the locals a pleasant feeling. Rain usually occurs in the evening or at night which further cools up the city.

In terms of rainfall, August and September are the rainiest months for the city. But Bengaluru usually enjoys moderate rainfall activity between May and July as well. However this year, the first half of July saw fairly low rainfall activity in the city. In fact, the first ten days in July this year were nearly dry. But starting last week, the city has been receiving light to moderate rains on a regular basis. But even then, 26 mm remains the highest 24-hour rainfall figure for the city in July this year.

This year, barring Bengaluru, nearly all parts of Karnataka have not experienced good Monsoon showers. South interior Karnataka is the only region which has performed well in terms of rainfall received. Coastal Karnataka is facing a deficit of -23% and north interior Karnataka is also experiencing a deficit of -38%. Meanwhile south interior Karnataka has recorded a positive 5% rainfall figure.

Rain over the past few days has ensured comfortable temperatures in Bengaluru. Maximum temperature in the city continues to settle in the high 20s, barely touching the mark of 30. Even minimums settle around 20°C. Between July 25 and 27, good showers are expected in the city. Moderate rainfall activity is likely to continue over the region for next few days.
