Key Takeaways

  • Scattered rain likely over Rajasthan, Punjab, Haryana, and Delhi
  • Delhi-NCR to receive rain or drizzle late night or early morning
  • Snowfall ongoing over northern mountains
  • Cold wave and dense fog likely after system clears

Northern plains are likely to witness scattered rainfall today and tomorrow. Rains will commence over Rajasthan and Punjab and progress towards Haryana and Delhi, with a lag of about 12 hours. Medium and high clouds have already reached these parts, though sky conditions remain indistinct due to fog in suspension. The capital city Delhi and the NCR are expected to receive rain or drizzle late tonight or during the early hours of tomorrow morning. The wet spell may continue until the forenoon hours tomorrow and clear away by late evening or night. Broad clearance is expected on Thursday; however, dense fog may redevelop across most parts of the region.

An active western disturbance has already engaged the northern mountains. Snowfall has commenced at a few places, with remaining areas likely to follow. West Rajasthan also witnessed isolated light rainfall during the night, with more showers expected to extend to northern and eastern parts of the state. Parts of Punjab and western Haryana are likely to receive winter showers later in the day. The Delhi region and adjoining Haryana districts, including Sonipat, Panipat, Rohtak, Rewari, Faridabad, and Gurugram, may have to wait until around midnight or even beyond.

These showers will be the first winter rainfall for the region. Clearance will set in late on Thursday and become more prominent on Friday. However, cold winds in the wake of the system are likely to intensify cold wave conditions and increase fog spread across the region. Transportation may be impacted, with possible disruptions to rail, road, and air traffic. This rainfall will be counted towards January, indicating that December has ended on a completely dry note for the national capital.
