Key Takeaways:

  • Tamil Nadu and Kerala are witnessing active pre-monsoon rain and thunderstorm activity.
  • An equatorial trough and embedded cyclonic circulation are influencing weather conditions across South India.
  • Isolated heavy rainfall with lightning and gusty winds is likely during the weekend.
  • A cyclonic circulation may intensify into a low-pressure area between May 12–13.

The extreme Southern Peninsula has been receiving fairly widespread pre-monsoon activity for the last couple of days. Rain and thundershower activity will continue today and over the weekend as well. Day temperatures have remained restricted to 35°C or below across the entire region, including the interiors of Tamil Nadu and adjoining parts of Kerala. Moderate showers were recorded along the coastline on either side, as well as over the interiors, including Madurai, Thanjavur, Punalur, Cochin and Palakkad.

There is a broad east-west trough, popularly known as the ‘equatorial trough’, extending from the equatorial Indian Ocean near the extreme south-central Arabian Sea to the proximal regions of the Malacca Strait on the eastern side. This trough has an embedded cyclonic circulation over South Sri Lanka and adjoining Comorin and Maldives region. This feature is likely to shift slightly northward over the next two days. Additionally, there is a north-south oriented seasonal trough extending across Rayalaseema, South Interior Karnataka and Kerala.

Under the combined influence of these two systems, Tamil Nadu and Kerala are likely to witness fairly widespread rain and thundershower activity. Isolated heavy spells are likely, accompanied by lightning and strong winds. Courtesy these features, an organised cyclonic circulation is likely to form over the same region on 11th May 2026. This may strengthen further into a low-pressure area between 12th and 13th May. Pre-monsoon activity is expected to intensify further over these states during next week.
