Prolonged dry spell in Chennai is all set to end, with rains to revive in the state capital. In fact, the entire state of Tamil Nadu would witness weather activity of varying intensity during the next 24 hours. All thanks to the low-pressure area marked in Southwest Bay of Bengal.
According to Skymet Weather, places such as Chennai, Nagapattinam and Karaikal has observed trace rainfall during the last 24 hours. These rains are now all set to increase and coastal parts of the state may observe mainly light rains on January 9 and 10. Few areas could also moderate showers but chances are less. Isolated light showers can also be seen over few interior parts of Tamil Nadu.

At present, sky is witnessing partly cloudy conditions. Weathermen are of the view that rains may visit the region during the evening hours.

These rains can be attributed to the low pressure area that has been brewing in Southwest Bay of Bengal. This system is embedded from the disturbances in the ITCZ (Inter Tropical Convergence Zone).
As reiterated earlier, the ITCZ during this time remains closer to the equator but on the southern hemisphere. There are certain disturbances which are embedded in the ITCZ, one of them being a low-pressure area in the Bay of Bengal currently moving northwards. Thus, these systems will be responsible for giving rains over the region.
With the withdrawal of Northeast Monsoon, Tamil Nadu including Chennai does not record many rains during January. In fact, there is a steep drop in the rainfall during this month. As in when we progress further in the season, rains would start vanishing from the region.
For instance, the monthly average for Chennai for January stands at 25.9 mm of rain as compared to 177 mm in December. This figure further reduces to 3.4 mm and 3.5 mm in February and March, respectively.
