Rain likely in J&K, HP and foothills during next 48 hours; Central India remains hot & dry

April 12, 2014 2:35 PM |

According to the latest weather update by Skymet Meteorology Division in India a fresh Western Disturbance as an upper air cyclonic circulation over north Pakistan and adjoining Afghanistan is affecting weather in Jammu and Kashmir. Scattered light rain is expected in the hills during the next 48 hours.

As the present Western Disturbance is not strong enough only light rain and snow is likely over Jammu and Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh and the foothills. Thundershower activity could commence in Punjab and Haryana and Delhi by late Sunday evening. A cloudy sky could bring some light rain in the foothills of Punjab and Haryana today as well. The system will clear out by the 14th of April.

Under the influence of the Western Disturbance wind patterns have changed in the northern plains. Humid south easterlies will replace north westerlies over the northern plains and extending up to Bihar, Jharkhand and West Bengal. These winds will lead to a rise in day temperatures as the system moves out. During the next 48 hours, night temperatures are likely to rise by a couple of notches.

According to Skymet Meteorology Division in India, weather in major tourist places including Srinagar, Jammu, Shimla, Kullu, Manali and Dharmsala would remain pleasant during this period.

Weather in rest of India

Yesterday, Arunachal Pradesh in the Northeast, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, Kerala and Tamil Nadu in the southern peninsula received some light rain. Wind discontinuity due to the merging of dry and moist air masses will persist in South India and bring some rain in coastal Kerala and extreme southern tip.

However, Indo-Gangetic plains and Central India will remain dry with no respite from the heat. Yesterday in Maharashtra, Nagpur and Sholapur recorded 39.9 °C and 40.2 °C as maximum temperatures, respectively. Bhubaneswar in Odisha will remain equally warm with maximum around 39 °C.
