Rain reduces in South India, normal pattern ahead of Monsoon

May 19, 2015 1:13 PM |

Rain in Kerala backwatersAfter witnessing some record breaking rain during last four days, the intensity of rain over peninsular region has now reduced. However, it is not a cause of concern as rains taking a back seat after a prolonged spell is a normal pattern before the onset of Southwest Monsoon.

According to Skymet Meteorology Division in India, both the systems on either side of the coast have now weakened and have resulted in reduced rainfall. But, the region will still continue to receive light to moderate rain over Kerala, Tamil Nadu and Interior Karnataka.

A cyclonic circulation over Bay of Bengal off the Tamil Nadu coast has moved towards south coastal Andhra Pradesh and further shifting away from the coast in northeast direction.

Meanwhile, another feeble cyclonic circulation over Lakshadweep and adjoining Kerala region has also become less-marked.

As per the latest forecast by Skymet, we now await for another weather system that is likely to affect in another three to four days, reviving the rainy activity once again.

Let us have a look at the rainfall figures across South India in a span of last 24 hours till 8:30 am on Tuesday.

People across South India had been enjoying pleasant weather conditions with maximum temperatures settling in low 30s and minimum temperatures in low 20s.

But in the wake of reduced rainfall, both day and night temperatures will now register a rising trend, along with an increase in humidity levels creating discomfort for people. However, the proximity of Monsoon will not let these temperatures shoot.

Present weather conditions are indicative of an early onset of Southwest Monsoon over Kerala. It has already arrived over Andaman and Nicobar Islands well before time and is likely to reach Sri Lanka shortly, thereafter hitting Kerala.

The official date for onset of Monsoon in Kerala is June 1 but this year Skymet predicts it to arrive three to four days prior than its expected time.
