Tamil Nadu is one of the least rainiest pockets during the Southwest Monsoon, as it is located in the rain shadow area. In fact, rains hardly make an appearance over the state.

However, the month of June has ended with surplus rains of 50.7 mm for the state as compared to its monthly normal average rainfall of 45.9 mm.
In fact, during the last 24 hours, light to moderate rains were witnessed over many places of Tamil Nadu. One or two places even recorded three-digit rainfall activity. However, for Tamil Nadu even two-digit rain in 24 hours is a very rare occasion.
Salem recorded very heavy rains to the tune of 134 mm, followed by Yercaud 117 mm, Madurai 29 mm, Kodaikanal 7.4 mm, Dharmapuri 7 mm. the capital city Chennai also saw some traces of rain.
Currently, the axis of Monsoon trough has shifted close to the foothills. Therefore, we expect Monsoon to remain weak over the entire country. Whenever such a phase is going around the country, Tamil Nadu tends to receive rainfall activity.
These rains are mostly attributed to the strong sea breeze and any weather system formed over the region in terms of cyclonic circulation and trough.
Further, we expect scattered light to moderate rains to continue over Tamil Nadu at least for the next two to three days, especially in the northern parts of the state.
