Southwest Monsoon has finally ended, it gave hefty showers in Nagaland, Mizoram, Manipur, and Tripura (NMMT) as these states were rain surplus by 25 percent. During the season, Assam witnessed floods in many districts, however, after heavy to very heavy showers, Assam and Meghalaya remain rain deficient by 10 percent each and Arunachal Pradesh by 11 percent.

The post Monsoon season also started with a bang as it poured good rains over Northeast India but now the rainfall activity has reduced and subdued rains are going on. Only a few parts of Meghalaya, Mizoram, Nagaland, and Sikkim could record few showers in the past day. In the last 24 hours from 8.30 am on Wednesday, Shillong in Meghalaya witnessed 37.9 mm of rain, Lengpui in Mizoram 10 mm, Kohima in Nagaland 5.8 mm.

In the same span of time, Mangan in Sikkim recorded 1.2 mm of rain and Gangtok 0.5 mm rain. These on and off showers will continue for another 48 hours over the entire northeastern part of the country. Thereafter, the rainfall activity is likely to increase over the NMMT region around October 7. Gradually by October 8 remaining parts of Northeast India will also receive good rains. However, the rainfall activity will continue only till October 9.

Thereafter, the rains will once again take a back seat. These showers will be attributed to a cyclonic circulation which is likely to form over Odisha coast. Due to this weather system, moderate winds from the Bay of Bengal will blow over the region leading to increase in moisture level and subsequent cloud formation which will lead to rain. These showers will not be very heavy so as to trigger flood-like situation.
