Rains to batter Kerala, Karnataka till Monsoon arrives

Pre-Monsoon rains in Kerala to take a short break

Many parts of Kerala and Karnataka have been witnessing rains from over a week now and it is predicted that these rains are likely to continue lashing both Kerala and Karnataka throughout the remaining days of the month.

In fact, pre-Monsoon rain and thundershowers are likely to pick up pace around May 27 and will keep on battering both the states.

Monsoon 2016 last year was very weak and this was the reason it ended on a deficit note for Kerala at 34%. However, pre-Monsoon activities this year commenced pretty early over Kerala.

As per Skymet Weather, Monsoon this year is scheduled to arrive over Kerala around May 29, with an error margin of +/- three days.

Skymet Weather reiterates that the reason for these good showers over both the states can be attributed to the persistence of a north-south trough over South Interior Karnataka and adjoining interior Tamil Nadu. From the last one month, the trough has been oscillating from east to west.

Due to the presence of this trough, humid winds from the Arabian Sea are increasing moisture over the region, leading to good pre-Monsoon activities.

In span of 24 hours from 08:30 am on Wednesday, Udhamangalam observed 20 mm of rains, Kodaikanal 12 mm, Valparai 8 mm, and Tirupattur recorded light rains of 7 mm.

These pre-Monsoon activities are expected to continue throughout the month end and gradually will merge with the upcoming Monsoon rains.
