A trough is currently running from Punjab to Bihar, which is expected to increase rainfall activity over entire East India. During the last 24 hours from 8:30 am on Wednesday, rains commenced over eastern parts of Uttar Pradesh with places like Bahraich, Gorakhpur and Fursatganj receiving light to moderate rains.

By the evening of February 7, rains will also commence over parts of Bihar, gradually covering Jharkhand and sub-Himalayan West Bengal.

During the rainy period from February 8 to February 9, we expect few moderate to heavy spells over East Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Jharkhand and northern districts of West Bengal. Chances of hailstorm activity cannot be ruled out along the foothills of these states.

Rain in Kolkata

As the rains are expected to remain limited to parts of Central and Northern districts of West Bengal, we do not expect any significant weather activity over the state capital Kolkata. However, isolated light rains may occur over the city on February 9, but these will not have any significant impact on the day to day life of the people.

Rains to subside

The rains, by the afternoon of February 9 will begin to scale down over East Uttar Pradesh and Bihar as the weather system will continue to move in eastward direction. By February 10, the rainy weather over East India will clear up entirely.

If we talk about rainfall data, most of the Eastern states are largely deficient as of now. The states of West Bengal, Jharkhand and Odisha are deficient by more than 90%, with Bihar at -66%. By the end of this rainy period (Feb 8 to Feb 9), the rainfall deficit over East India is sure to come down to some extent.
