In the wake of creating havoc in most parts of Northeast India, the rains have at last hinted a change. Particularly, Assam that had seen one of the most unusual bad floods during the Southwest Monsoon 2017 season. Almost 72, 000 people in five districts of the state have been influenced. However, now rains in Assam and adjoining regions have decreased exceptionally in regard to the intensity.

In the past 24 hours, light rains with isolated moderate showers were witnessed at a few places in Northeast India. In contrast with the other regions of Northeast India, the intensity of rains was more over the NMMT (Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, and Tripura) region.

Within the span of 24 hours from 8:30 am on Thursday, Lengpui recorded moderate rainfall of 20 mm, followed by Kohima 5 mm and Agartala 1.4 mm, while the other districts in Assam, Meghalaya, and Arunachal Pradesh merely recorded traces of rainfall. On the other hand, remaining parts of Northeastern states failed to record any good showers.

The reason for these light to moderate rains can be attributed to a cyclonic circulation which is seen prevailing over east central Bay of Bengal. Further, it is likely to shift towards North. Moreover, the southerly-southeasterly moist winds are also blowing over the entire northeastern states.

Due to the effect of this weather system, the intensity of these rains is likely to increase further especially over Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, and Tripura. Thus, the rains may intensify from light to moderate during the next 24 hours.

As per the weathermen at Skymet Weather, scattered rain and thundershowers are expected to continue in several places over Assam, Meghalaya, and Arunachal Pradesh during the similar time period.

In the meantime, maximums are expected to settle between 33-35 degree Celsius. While the minimum temperatures will be around 26-28 degree Celsius. Hence, the afternoons will be warm and humid whereas, the mornings and night are expected to remain comfortable.

As on October 5, the sub-divisional rainfall distribution statistics show that Assam, Meghalaya, Arunachal Pradesh are all rain surplus by 15%, 14%, and 64%, respectively. On the other hand, the NMMT region is rain deficient by 44%.
