March 10, 2014 2:02 PM |

Srinagar, the summer capital of Jammu & Kashmir has recorded 46.3 mm of snow and rain in the last 24 hours. This is the second heaviest rain and snow in a span of 24 hours in Srinagar since 2007. On 13th March, 2007, Srinagar had recorded 89.4 mm of rain and snow.

Several places in Jammu & Kashmir observed rain and snow between 8:30 am on Sunday and 8:30 am on Monday. Pahalgam in south Kashmir recorded 46.2 mm of rain, which is the fourth heaviest in last ten years.

Gulmarg recorded 40.6 mm of snow and rain which is the third highest amount of rain in the last 10 years. Banihal also registered 46.5 mm of snow and rain during the period.

According to the latest weather update by Skymet Meteorology Division in India, the Western Disturbance currently lies over Jammu & Kashmir and is moving eastwards due to which snow and rain would continue during the next two days over Jammu & Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand.

Rain will also continue over northwest plains in Punjab, Haryana, Rajasthan, Delhi and west Uttar Pradesh as a cyclonic circulation over west Rajasthan while working in tandem with the Western Disturbance would shift eastwards during this period.

Meanwhile, rain or showers would continue in Central India during the next two days but the intensity will not be similar to that experienced in the last 48 hours. According to the latest weather update by Skymet Meteorology Division in India, rain will reduce in Central India only after the next two days as the anti-cyclonic circulation which persists over Odisha and adjoining areas of Andhra Pradesh will move inland, changing the wind condition and reducing rain.

At the moment, due to this weather system, winds from the Arabian Sea and the Bay of Bengal are colliding to bring rain over Central and eastcentral India. But the moment this cyclonic circulation shifts the convergence of winds will weaken.
