Series of weather systems to cause umbrella weather over North India

Wintry weather over North India is driven by the winter systems which are named as Western Disturbances over India, Pakistan and Afghanistan region. The system is responsible for giving rain and snow over the hilly states of North India. The terminology of these systems varies across the globe.

These wintry systems move around the globe travelling across Europe, oceans, namely the Atlantic Ocean. Before appearing over the Indian sub-continent, these systems get energized through two main sources, i.e. water bodies including the Mediterranean Sea as well as the Caspian Sea.

The disturbances travel across the Mediterranean Sea, the Middle East, Central Asia thereafter over Caspian Sea furthermore moving towards Afghanistan. These two water bodies help in energizing these weather systems before they move towards the Indian sub-continent.

However, at the time of its approach towards the Indian sub-continent, they tend to fade away thereafter due to the mountainous terrain of the hills of North India.

At present, there are a series of such systems moving across in a queue which are likely to affect the weather over North India during the next ten days.

The first system is currently over the Pakistan region and while it is tracking northeastwards, the disturbance is expected to give rain and snow over Jammu and Kashmir and few parts of Himachal Pradesh. Isolated weather activity over Uttarakhand cannot be ruled out. Its induced circulation is also over Rajasthan which may cause thunderstorm activity across Delhi-NCR, Rajasthan and West Uttar Pradesh tomorrow. Thunderstorms during this time are usually an indicator of winter weather in its last leg.

Behind this system, another disturbance is currently over Central Asia and is yet to cross the Caspian Sea. Thus, the next spell of rain and snow over the hills of North India is expected around February 24 and will continue until February 26.

Yet another system is behind and is expected to begin affecting the North Indian hills around February 28 giving rain and snow over the region spilling into the first week of March. Thus, a rainy Holi is also possible over some parts.

The severity of these three systems will keep increasing with the first being the least active and the last one being the strongest giving rain over a larger area.

The first two disturbances and its induced systems may not reach central or eastern parts of the country. However, the third set of systems may cause some rains over these parts as well.
