Srinagar gets season’s first snowfall, mercury drops to subzero

December 12, 2017 1:37 PM |

Kashmir snowfallSrinagar has witnessed its first spell of snowfall in this winter season. However, this spell was little surprising for the residents as the activity is quite early in the season, even though it not an exception.

For the last two consecutive year, the state capital has not witnessed snowfall during December.

In span of 24 hours from 8:30 am on Monday, Srinagar has recorded 22 mm of rain, while nearby areas of Banihal, Pahalgam and Gulmarg have seen heavy to very heavy rains and snow during the similar time frame.

In wake of this, Jammu-Srinagar National Highway has also been shut down. This 300-km long highway is of great importance as it connects Kashmir with rest of the country.

Not only this, mercury has plunged to subzero temperatures in view of these showers, exposing people to extremely cold weather conditions. The minimum temperature in Srinagar was recorded at -0.2°C, while maximum temperature was at 5°C.

As reiterated by Skymet Weather, rain and snow can be attributed to the passage of an active Western Disturbance across Jammu and Kashmir.

According to weathermen, we expect some more spell of rains and snow over the city and nearby areas during the next 24 hours. However, intensity of the precipitation would now see a reducing trend as the Western Disturbance is moving away in east direction.

The hilly states of North India including Srinagar would be inching towards clearance tomorrow onwards.
