Temperatures soar to 37 degrees in Mumbai, more hot days lie ahead

March 16, 2020 4:52 PM |

The coastal city of Mumbai observed day temperatures reaching 37 degree Celsius yesterday. It was the observatory of Santa Cruz that recorded this temperature at an exact 37.0°C, a total of four degrees above the normal mark.

The same feature is going to prevail today, tomorrow and will weaken thereafter. Temperatures might take a dip a day after tomorrow. So, a relief from the soaring temperatures is being expected a day after tomorrow.

Until then, humidity will peak considerably, and the discomfort levels will soar proportionately to it. Meanwhile, the sky will remain clear and no haze and mist will prevail.

Mumbai generally observes dry weather in the month of March. Even the months of January and February are quite dry for the city. Only the second half of May sees thundershowers. In fact, March is the transition period from Winter to Pre-Monsoon, which is quite a hot span for the city. Normally, the second half of March, sees temperatures reaching up to 40 degrees.

The first time the city saw its day temperatures peaking to 37 degrees this year, was on February 25. The three-day period between February 25, 26 and 27 saw the maximums peaking to as high as 38 degrees at times. This was followed by a 10-day period when temperatures remained suppressed and lingered close to just above the 30s.

On March 14, yet again temperatures soared and reached 34 degrees and it was just yesterday that the city of Mumbai recorded a day temperature of 37 degree Celsius. This temperature is only going to rise further and today might even peak to 38 degrees.

Temperature fluctuation depends mainly on the wind pattern. Sea breeze plays quite some role in the heating process. At present, there are anti-cyclonic winds in the Arabian Sea, which are restricting the strength and outflow of westerly winds.
