Chennai rains remained far and few during the months of October and November. So much so that the weather conditions remained almost dry throughout the months. Northeast Monsoon in all were subdued over the city and other parts of Peninsular India.
However, as December began, the rainfall saga begun over the capital city of Tamil Nadu. First it was Cyclone Nada which resulted in a few moderate to heavy spells of rain. Thereafter, a dry spell occurred for a few days and then followed Cyclone Vardah.
The cyclonic storm which was first likely to hit Andhra Pradesh coast changed direction and made landfall near Chennai. So much so that the city received three digit rains yesterday. Schools and colleges were closed, flight services were suspended, cars had topped due to strong winds.
A similar situation occurred last year around this time. While the system that affected the capital city of Tamil Nadu was not a cyclone and only a depression, the damage was more than this time.
The city was paralyzed and the situation remained the same for a long time. In fact, roads were flooded, power outage was observed. So much so that people did not even have food to eat. Schools, colleges, offices, everything came to a standstill for a few days.
It seems like the month of December and Chennai rains have an unusual relationship. A relationship that has only brought bad news for two straight years. However, during the rest of November, Chennai rains will remain light for the next few days.
