Unusually foggy weather witnessed in Madhya Pradesh

January 16, 2015 12:38 PM |

Thick fog enveloped north and western parts of Madhya Pradesh on Friday morning. Visibility reduced to 50 meters in the two major cities of Bhopal and Indore, while Gwalior observed zero visibility.

The normal frequency of occurrence of fog in Bhopal is just about a day in the month of January. However, the state witnessed thick fog for the fourth day this month. Unseasonal moderate rain had brought about fog for three days, in the first week of January.

Low temperatures, availability of moisture and speed of winds are the three major factors for the formation of fog. Maximum and minimum temperature recorded in Bhopal on Friday was 25.7°C and 10°C, respectively. With minimum dropping to 10°C even in Indore, conditions were favourable for formation of fog. But the occurrence of fog today morning was unusual as there has not been any rain. This scenario could be attributed to light and variable winds blowing across the region.

The Western Disturbance which brought precipitation in North India has moved away. The anti-cyclonic circulation over Rajasthan and adjoining areas made the winds light and variable in Madhya Pradesh. With temperature and moisture content being conducive, thick fog has enveloped the state.

Winds will not change over the area for another day and state could witness foggy conditions tomorrow as well. Fog will clear up fast and maximum could rise up to mid-twenties in Bhopal, Indore and Gwalior. Minimums will maintain levels around 10°C.
