Updated at 5:00 PM: As predicted by Skymet Weather, Mumbai has been witnessing heavy Monsoon rains since Tuesday morning. In span of mere 6 hours from 8:30 am to 2:30 am, Santa Cruz Observatory recorded very heavy rains to the tune of 83 mm. Since Monday till now, Mumbai has recorded torrential rains of 214 mm.
Going further, we do expect any relief from the ongoing rains and expect moderate to heavy Monsoon showers to continue tonight. Not only this, weather models are indicating that rains are likely to even pick up pace by late evening or night hours.
Hence, Tuesday will be the second consecutive day to record three-digit rainfall during the month of July. And, this is not the end, we need to watch out for some more days as rains are likely to follow similar trend.
Published at 12:00 PM: After remaining on the lighter side for last one week, heavy Mumbai rains returned to Mumbai. All that to the vigorous Monsoon conditions prevailing all the along the Coastal Maharashtra and Coastal Karnataka.
Monday evening saw Monsoon rains reviving, with showers taking vigorous turn by night. In last 24 hours till 8:30 am on Tuesday, Santa Cruz Observatory recorded extremely heavy rainfall to the tune of 131 mm of rain, followed by Colaba that saw 75 mm of rain.

In fact, there has been no let up in rains since last evening. At present also, moderate to heavy rains are lashing several parts of Mumbai. Overcast sky conditions and moderate breeze have led to extremely pleasant weather conditions across the maximum city. Mercury is also currently hovering around 25°C and day temperature are not likely to cross 30°C today.
In fact, weathermen are of the view that rains would continue throughout the day, with short breaks in between. According to Skymet Weather, we are expecting more rains coning in the week and that too with increasing trend during the next 3-4 days.

Although there is no weather system over Mumbai but still the city has managed to record extremely heavy rainfall. As per weathermen, there are two reasons behind Mumbai rains in the absence of any significant weather system.
Firstly, whenever the axis of Monsoon trough shifts along the foothills, rains are then confined to West Coast, foothills of Himalayas, Tamil Nadu and Rayalaseema. Second, if any system is forming in North Bay of Bengal that would eventually pull the Monsoon surge.
Mumbai, at present, is in the first situation wherein it recorded extremely heavy rainfall. Not only this, the city is now in the changeover mode to the second one. A cyclonic circulation is seen brewing in Bay of Bengal, which would keep the Monsoon surge active over Mumbai.
Thus, Mumbaikars must watch out for some moderate to heavy rains, with one or two extremely heavy spell in the coming days.
