After incessant rain, now water released by Andhra Pradesh has been wreaking havoc in flood-ravaged Chennai. Local authorities were already having hard time to bale out water from inundated streets and now the inflow from neighbouring state has made it tougher.
Reportedly, the situation remains grim as water from Andhra Pradesh has made it way into Chennai’s major waterways of Kosasthalaiyar and Buckingham Canal.
Both the canals are flowing beyond their capacity levels. With both the waterways running almost full, the flood fury is expected to continue for little longer.
“Buckingham Canal is carrying surplus water from Andhra Pradesh. So, the flow of water from micro drains into it and other macro drains is not possible. The zones of Tiruvottiyur, Manali, Royapuram, Teynampet, Adyar, Perungudi and Sholinganallur are affected,” Vikram Kapur, Corporation Commissioner told national daily The Hindu.
As per the data by the Chennai Corporation, water has receded in 692 localities of the city but 167 localities are still inundated.
Chennai continues to reel under flood-like conditions after a considerably long spell of extreme heavy rainfall in the region. Chennai floods have forced more than 70,000 people into relief camps so far.
As per the reports, the volume of discharge into Kosasthalaiyar River has been surged to nearly 7,000 cusecs on Friday.
