The period of ample sunshine and above normal temperatures in the hills of North India will be interrupted by a prolonged spell of rain and snowfall.
A fresh Western Disturbance has already caused widespread snowfall in the glaciers and clouding in the hills of Jammu and Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand. Middle and lower reaches will witness rain and snowfall activity commencing from tonight or tomorrow morning.
Both day and night temperatures in Jammu and Kashmir at present are well above normal. On Sunday, maximum in Banihal was 5 degrees above normal at 17°C. Batote was equally warm at 18.9°C, which is 7 degrees above normal. Bhaderwah is also experiencing warm weather with maximum 8 degrees above normal at 21.5°C.
Rain in Plains of North India
Weather activity will trickle down to the foothills and then to the plains with a lag of two days. The rain belt will cover Punjab, Haryana, Delhi and west Uttar Pradesh by the evening hours of February 24 and continue for 24 hours. In wake of the Western Disturbance, maximum temperatures will drop marginally but will still remain above normal. Delhi at present is 4 degrees above normal at 28.6°C.
The hilly states will continue to witness light to moderate rain till the end of February on account of another Western Disturbance around February 28.
