Winter freeze over Punjab and Haryana, severe cold day conditions to persist

December 18, 2020 9:00 AM |

Winters in North India

Severe cold is unrelenting over plains of North India. Rather the degree of freeze has intensified and also spread its wing to cover large areas of Punjab and Haryana. A blanket of thick fog has added to the misery and moderate breeze has stepped up the wind chill factor. The feel like temperatures across the region is 2-4°C less than the actuals. The observed temperatures as such are measured in the shade and therefore the feel like temperatures are expected to be far lower than the recorded ones.

Punjab and Haryana are being swept in entirety by the icy winds from the hill ranges of Dhauladhar and Shivalik across the Himalayan region. Severe Cold day conditions are prevalent over complete Punjab, pockets of Haryana and North Rajasthan. The day temperatures are 8-12°C below the normal. The minimum temperatures are also trailing behind the average to result in cold wave conditions in certain arid zones.

Maximum Temperatures

These severe cold conditions are likely to persist for the next 3 days. Thereafter a western disturbance is arriving and affecting weather across the hills. In the plains, the breeze is likely to slow down and reversal in the winds to light easterly is expected. This change may break the impasse and relieve the onslaught of deep freeze over most parts of Punjab and Haryana.
