At 11.2°C Kolkata gets lowest temp in 3 years, mercury to rise
As reiterated by Skymet Weather, minimum temperature in Kolkata has plummeted further. As of today morning, the mercury has plunged to 11.2°C. Yesterday’s minimum temperature was 11.9°C.
This is the lowest temperature recorded since the onset of winters. Previously such weather conditions were observed on January 9, 2013 when night temperature had gone down to a whopping of 9°C in Kolkata.
These are unusually wintry conditions prevailing over Kolkata due to dry and cool winds from the North blowing over the region. These winds are reaching up to the city from snow clad mountains of Himalayas.
As these winds are cold in nature, it has made temperatures to plummet throughout the state including the capital city.
As per Skymet Weather, gradual rise in temperatures can be expected in next 48 hours. Temperatures are likely to rise just by 1 or 2°C; this signifies that the increase in temperatures will not be very significant for now. However the winter chill will continue to grip the city during morning and night hours.
Kolkata has been witnessing unusual wintry conditions for the last 24 hours. In wake of this maximum temperatures have been settling below normal by 2-3 degrees. However, it is the minimums that have gone down significantly.
On Saturday, the state capital recorded night temperatures at 11.9°C, which is very rare for the city like Kolkata. The average minimum temperature for Kolkata during the month of January stands at 14°C.
According to Skymet Weather, dry and cool northwesterly winds from the snow-clad Himalayas are reaching up to Kolkata and adjoining areas. Moreover, an anti-cyclone marked over Madhya Pradesh is strengthening these chilly.
As a result, mercury over the city has gone down significantly. Moreover, no relief is in offing from the chilly nights during the next 24 to 48 hours.
Weathermen predict, night temperature over Kolkata and adjoining areas are to drop further during the next 24 hours. These moderate cool winds will continue to prevail over the region during the afternoon hours as well, thus, day maximums will also a take marginal dip.
Temperatures will start rising again January 16 onwards, as a Western Disturbance will start affecting the Western Himalayas. This will in turn change the wind pattern to relatively warm and humid easterly winds that would gradually lead to increase in minimum temperatures.
