Christmas blizzard is in store for several parts of the United States as winter storm Europa is likely to wreak havoc in terms of snowfall over many parts. Both, the areas of upper Midwest as well as Northern Plains are expected to witness freezing rain, along with blizzard conditions.
Travel plans will be severely affected along the Christmas weekend in areas of the Northern Plains and Mountain West. Snow, as well as sleet will be witnessed with many areas experiencing a white Christmas in Northern New England and the Upper Midwest.
On Friday, the snowfall will be confined to the areas of Sierra Nevada where snow intensity will be on the heavier side. Rainfall is expected in many parts of California, particularly the lower elevations. Expect some snowfall in parts of the Northern Rockies, Cascades, Northern Great Basin, and Siskiyous.
On Saturday i.e. Christmas eve, snowfall is expected to continue over the Rockies along with the Great Basin, southern parts of California as well as the Southwest. The East Mississippi Valley may be affected with some snowfall. Low visibility is expected along with snow in these areas which may hinder travel plans.
Snowfall is likely to become heavy over the Northern Plains as well as the Rockies on Sunday, Christmas Day. Areas including both North and South Dakota, Nebraska, Wyoming, and Montana are likely to observe blizzard conditions. Parts of southern and central plains are likely to witness a few good spells of thunderstorms.
Central and upstate New York may also witness some light freezing rain on the night of Christmas. Snowfall is likely to spread through Monday as well. Snow, sleet, and freezing rain may prevail in parts of New England, Great Lakes and Upstate New York.
