Foothills of West Uttar Pradesh were lashed with extremely heavy rainfall during the past 24 hours. The weather system over that area was embedded with meso-scale convective clouds, resulting in flooding downpours in some pockets. Heavy to very heavy rains struck Bareilly, Shahjahanpur, Pilibhit, Hardoi and Kheri. Foothills and lower hills of Uttarakhand also witnessed extreme weather activity. Weather conditions are likely to become better for Bareilly as the day progresses.

Bareilly, situated near the Ramganga River and located halfway through Delhi-Lucknow, was literally drowned due to a very heavy downpour in the evening and night yesterday. The city recorded an all-time high of 24-hour rainfall. The industrial city registered the highest rainfall of 381.1 mm during the past 24 hours. The neighbouring station Shahjahanpur also was deluged with 24-hour rainfall of 227 mm during the same period. Before this, the city had a record of 267.2 mm rainfall established on 17 Sep 2005. In the last about 15 years, the foothills town exceeded the 100 mm mark in 24 hours twice, with 102.9 mm rainfall on 17 Sep 2023 and 125.3 mm on 01 Sep 2025. All the previous records were shattered with overnight pounding rains, and the city was flooded with knee-deep water at a few places, inundating low-lying areas dreadfully.

There was a low-pressure area over Southwest Uttar Pradesh, the remnant of the earlier monsoon system over Madhya Pradesh. Also, there is a western disturbance moving across the hills. The seasonal monsoon trough was dragged close to the foothills. Under the combined influence of these weather systems, heavy to very heavy rainfall was triggered over and around Bareilly. The low pressure will gradually shift to central parts of the state and weaken too. The weather activity will affect more of Uttarakhand and some parts of Uttar Pradesh, downstream along the River Ramganga. The places at risk will include Pilibhit, Kheri, Bahraich, Shravasti, Sitapur and Shahpur. Heavy rains will reach the capital Lucknow and neighbouring city Kanpur as well. Heavy rainfall belt will extend further along the foothills of East Uttar Pradesh and Bihar during mid-week and later.
