Heavy Rains To Cease Over Mumbai, Light Showers Only For Next One Week
May 28, 2025, 1:30 PM | Skymet Weather TeamMumbai and its suburbs received unprecedented heavy rainfall during this month. Courtesy, a depression forming over the east-central Arabian Sea, off the Konkan Coast, and moving inland, during last week, there was a deluge in some parts of the city. It also fetched the seasonal southwest monsoon at the earliest date since the records from 1950 onwards.
The airport observatory at Santacruz and Colaba both registered over 100 mm of rainfall in 24 hours. Colaba had this feat twice during this week. The observatory has recorded an all-time high of 472.2 mm of rainfall during this month so far. Santa Cruz remains far behind with a total of 335.7mm during this period. Please note that the city has a normal monthly rainfall of just 11mm.
The depression had earlier weakened to a low-pressure area and was followed by a cyclonic circulation. Now, this remnant circulation has further become less marked and nearly insignificant to cause any weather activity. The rainfall activity has already reduced all along the Konkan Coast. A further dip is likely during this week.
The westerly stream from the Arabian Sea hitting the Konkan Coast has weakened now. The cyclonic circulation in the lower levels over North Konkan and adjoining East-Central Arabia is expected to become less marked and ultimately get filled up, without any further flare in the weather activity.
There is a fresh low-pressure area over the Northwest Bay of Bengal, and it has become more marked in the past 12 hours. This is likely to move northward and become a depression over the sea itself. The weather system is likely to track more north and northeastward in the next 2-3 days. Normally, the formation of a monsoon system over the Bay of Bengal speeds up the westerly flow all along the Western Ghats, including Konkan. But the system is unlikely to move deep inland and will rather head towards the northeast region, across Bangladesh.
Under such conditions, moderate to heavy showers will remain confined to Goa, Coastal Karnataka, and Kerala. Intense weather activity will spare the North Konkan region, including Mumbai. Typical monsoon weather with moderate sea breezes, cloudy skies, and fleeting showers without causing any disruptions is likely over Mumbai and its suburbs for the next one week or so.
