With Monsoon comes a sigh of relief for most of us, as the season brings much needed respite from the summer heat. As the Monsoon brings much needed relief it also brings the unwanted mayhem of mosquitoes. And in the recent days, most areas of Delhi and NCR have seen a boom in the population of mosquitoes which is directly proportionate to the rise in the number of cases of Dengue and Chikangunya.
Hospitals across Delhi have recorded 79 cases of Chikangunya, whereas 24 cases of Dengue have been recorded and 13 cases of Malaria. This report is from various hospitals across Delhi, if we keep a tab on the local clinics, then the actual number will be way much more.
This number of cases is very high for this time of the year. Chikangunya cases have seen a strict rise as a total of four cases were recorded during the same period in the last five years put together.
Last year, Delhi recorded 7,760 Chikungunya and 4,431 dengue cases.
Dr. B K Hazarika, health officer of South Delhi Municipal Corporation (SDMC) said, "Delhi witnessed rain last week. This has certainly caused a proliferation of mosquitoes and diseases have spread. We are hopeful that the numbers will come down as summer heat makes a comeback."
