First Wave of Floods Hit AssamDuring the last 4 to 5 days, heavy to very heavy rain have lashed parts of Assam. Due to this, the first wave of floods hit the state in last 24 hours affecting nine districts and around 60,000 people. Brahmaputra and the Jia Bharali, at Nematighat in Jorhat and in Sonitpur districts were flowing above the danger mark, leading to flooding in most parts of Assam.

Nine districts including Sonitpur, Dhemaji, Barpeta, Lakhimpur, Bongaigaon, Darrang, Tinsukia, Goalpara, and Nalbari districts. The worst hit district is Assam where more than 25,000 people have been affected due to the floods and one has been reported dead.

In the last 4 to 5 days, Dibrugarh received 154 mm of rain, North Lakhimpur observed 261 mm of rain, and Tezpur recorded 121 mm of rain.

Floods have damaged over 330 hectares of crop area. In the Charduar area of Sonitpur district, three roads have also been reported to be damaged. In Tinsukia district, two relief camps have been opened. The state government is making efforts to provide supply relief materials and open more relief camps in the affected areas.

Monsoon covered most parts of Assam on June 6, but the state was observing very heavy pre-Monsoon showers before that as well. Strong southerly winds from Bay of Bengal were reaching up to Meghalaya and Assam leading to convective cloud formation and heavy thundershowers.

According to Skymet Meteorology Division in India, heavy rain will continue over most parts of Assam and Meghalaya but gradually, after 2 to 3 days, the intensity of rain over Assam will decrease to some extent. The rain belt will then shift towards the south of Assam over Meghalaya and North Bangladesh, giving rainfall over these areas.
